COLONIC HYDROTHERAPY

The colon, also called the large intestine or bowel, is situated in the abdomen and forms the last part of the digestive tract. It handles our food waste and much of our body waste. A normal colon is populated by billions of friendly bacteria which assist in detoxifying waste, the synthesis of certain vitamins, and helps to protect against infection. However, the delicate balance of this internal ecosystem can be easily disturbed by a number of factors including stress, pollution, processed food, artificial drinks, certain drugs, smoking and exposure to toxic substances - in fact, modern life!

In disease poor digestion, yeast overgrowth, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation and diarrhoea are usually accompanied by auto-intoxication - literally self-poisoning (the re-absorption of soluble wastes into the bloodstream) which places a heavy burden upon the other eliminative organs of the body: the kidneys, skin and lungs. Chronic constipation may also lead to further direct complications, such as diverticulitis, haemorrhoids, fissures or colitis, as well as chronic toxic conditions in the rest of the body such as acne and eczema. It may also exacerbate inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. The cardiovascular system, the nervous system and the liver are all especially prone to this self-poisoning and this can contribute to feeling heavy, dull and slow.

Every system and organ of the body is connected to the colon by reflex points. Colon hydrotherapy stimulates these points, thereby benefiting the corresponding body parts. By having colon hydrotherapy, the entire large intestine is cleansed, which is much more beneficial than an enema.

Therefore the treatment provides a thorough, gentle and safe internal bathing of the colon, using warm filtered water to eliminate old waste material and harmful toxins. It stimulates the immune system, provides a favourable environment for friendly bacteria, encourages the colon to function on its own and improves bowel and muscle tone.

Your practitioner may use special massage or other techniques to stimulate the release of stored matter.

At all times your modesty is preserved by the use of a gown or towel. Herbal and probiotic supplements may be recommended as part of your treatment and your practitioner may advise beneficial dietary and/or lifestyle changes, if indicated.

The benefits

Following colonic hydrotherapy most people quickly experience improved mental and physical wellbeing. The individual speed and level of improvement is dependent upon several factors including bowel action, the amount of toxic load, the number of years of preceding bowel problems and past lifestyle. Your practitioner will advise you on the number of treatments required and how frequently you should have follow up treatments to maintain your desired level of health, as well as any other measures such as dietary changes.

Finally, here at Anam Cara we know that behind most physical problems there often lies a more complex story which relates to both the physical and emotional health of an individual.

Therefore, each practitioner can work independently or, with your permission consult more closely with the wider Anam Cara Practitioner team.

Integrated therapy and treatment choices could include, for example, naturopathic medicine, nutrition and supplementation, Shiatsu and massage or psychotherapy amongst others. This enabling a truly holistic approach to be achieved.

Anam Cara has access to two registered practitioners who each belong to ARCH, the Association of Registered Colon Hydrotherapists.

ARCH Practitioners are stringently trained, screened (which includes a Criminal Records Bureau check) and regulated by the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council. All to ensure the highest standards of competence, practice, hygiene, client care and safety.

As regulated, professional and experienced practitioners our colonic hydrotherapists understand a client may have initial concerns and questions, or possibly be feeling anxious about the procedure itself. Therefore time is built into the initial assessment to ensure that all your questions and issues can be discussed as well as enough time for the procedure to be explained to you.

A thorough medical history and lifestyle assessment will also be taken to ensure a full picture of your story and its related issues and symptoms are known and sufficiently understood by your practitioner.

At times, there are circumstances where a colonic treatment cannot be undertaken. On these occasions the Anam Cara team will explain the reasons why and consider an alternative course of action with you. With such a depth of knowledge and experience to hand via its integrated team of holistic practitioners, you can be confident that Anam Cara can invariably find a better suited healing path for your circumstances.
